The Ambassadors for Peace (AFP) program is a global network of leaders representing the religious, racial, and ethnic diversity of the human family, as well as all disciplines of human endeavor. The Ambassadors stand on the common ground of shared principles, committed to the path of promoting reconciliation, overcoming barriers, and building peace. The AFP initiative is a project of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), founded by Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, in 2005.
UPF is a global alliance of individuals, families and organizations dedicated to help realize true and lasting peace through the education of true love, cooperation and co-prosperity in the building of "One Family under God." It is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Presently, it is working to actively assist the UN with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The AFP program promotes the following five Principles for peace:
1. There is one God who is the Creator of all things and the Parent of humankind.
"God", by many other names, is the origin and source of love, life, and all our ideals and values. As Parent, God loves all people - His sons and daughters, and sustains the universe in which we live.
2. Human Beings are Essentially Spiritual and Moral in Nature
Human beings seek for truth, beauty and goodness. Life's deepest meaning and purpose can be found through the pursuit of these essential though intangible attributes. Each person has an eternal spirit that transcends this physical life. Spiritual principles are to be practiced in this life so that we are prepared for the eternal spiritual world.
3. The Family is the "School of Love" and Cornerstone for World Peace
The true family (God, husband-wife, parents-children) is the fundamental unit and cornerstone for true love and peace. It is the root of the heavenly culture. It is in the family that we experience love and interdependence. In the family, the most basic personal and public virtues are learnt. Understanding the family as the "school of love" helps us to recognize that family is the most essential human institution. The foundation for a healthy family is a faithful, committed and loving marriage centered on God.
4. The Highest Standard for Human Relationship is to "Live for the Sake of Others."
By practicing living for the sake of others, we become "other-centered" - altruistic, rather than "self-centered" - egoistic. The essence of good character is true love expressed through unselfish actions. "Live for the sake of others" is a common principle of the world's religions. This basic principle also exists throughout nature and is at the heart of its existence, development and prosperity. It is the ground principle of a well balanced ecosystem and a universally prosperous humanity.
5. Interreligious and International Dialogue and Cooperation are Essential for World Peace
Lasting peace cannot be achieved through political compromise alone, but requires addressing the root cause of conflict and sexual immorality. Transcending racial, religious, national, and ethnic barriers is an imperative of our time. This quality of heart gives people the power to forgive, love and unite. It empowers the person to overcome generations of hatred, resentment, and violence. The cooperative efforts of the world's religions and nations are therefore encouraged in order to attain the highest aspiration of humankind: becoming "0ne family under God."
